Today was, for the most part, an ordinary Saturday at our house. It was a bit different than normal because I spent the morning driving back with Angie from Arlington after spending Good Friday at a David Crowder Band concert (which, by the way, was a most amazing way to spend Good Friday) and my family headed to the baseball field for the first of 3 games today. Collin had a 9:00 game, and Brendan's team played at 3:00, and he had been asked to fill in for another team at 7:00.
After Brendan's first game we went to Texadelphia to get something to eat and Cole asked me if I had noticed the field umpire. He was a rather large young man that Cole had never seen before. He commented that he was wearing UT sunglasses and wondered if he played football for Texas. I, of course, just assumed that it was a big coincidence that he looked like a football player and was wearing UT sunglasses, and that Cole was reading too much into it. But I asked him why he didn't walk up to the guy and introduce himself and say something like, "Hi, I'm Cole. I'm out here all the time and I've never seen you before. Welcome and it's nice to meet you." Or something like that. Cole said the thought hadn't occurred to him.
So after we ate, we went back to the field for the second game and the same guy was the field umpire. The first base coach for the team Brendan was playing for walked over and asked if we follow UT football. I couldn't help but laugh out loud and think to myself that the guy doesn't know Cole at all because if he did he wouldn't have asked that question, but he went on to explain that the field umpire does, in fact, play football for UT. His name is Tray Allen and as soon as he told Cole his name, Cole was able to recite Tray's entire career at UT right down to the foot injury he suffered last year.
My thought was...I want a picture with this guy. So I told Cole that after the game was over I wanted to go speak to Tray and ask him if he would mind taking a picture with Brendan and with me. Which we did. Tray was very gracious and chatted with us for a few minutes and didn't mind taking a couple of pictures with us.
We're, of course, hoping for a much better football season for UT, and we're hoping for a great season for this very nice young man. And we hope to see him again at the baseball field. Hook 'em!
